Not every project crosses the intersection between my two work passions of design and music, however, when a client’s project merges those two worlds my level of enthusiasm skyrockets straight into the stratosphere. When James May Engineering, a northern California- based electronics company, reached out to inquire about a magazine advertisement design, I jumped at the opportunity.

Early in the design process, JME discussed their idea of styling the magazine ad to resemble graphics found on vintage fruit crate labels. A wealth of reference materials supplied by the client expanded on their concept while also supplying a solid foundation of ideas for the artistic direction of the ad. Opting for custom illustrations, along with a careful selection of fonts, further reinforced the era-specific retro aesthetic project goal. Although not envisioned at the beginning of the project, JME decided to extract the graphic elements from the ad layout to implement on the product packaging box.
